Purpose

The program aims to engage children/youth who are engaging in high-risk criminal type behavior and or are being exposed to such activity and who are experiencing or are diagnosed with a FASD, PDD, or other complex needs. The program will provide a client centred and strength-based approach while building a relationship with individual/family and understanding the root cause of the problem. The target age for this initiative is primarily focused on children between the age of 6 and 11. The secondary focus is on youth ages 12-18.

Process

A referral can be received through a third party, or it can be a self-referral). Once the referral is received the Outreach workers will:

  • Meet with the family (guardian, child, youth involved) to gain an understanding of the concerns and needs.  Information will also be gathered from all parties involved such as school, RCMP, Mental health, Addictions, etc.
  • Complete an intake with the family and establish goals
  • Assign group work for both child/youth and guardian(s) involved
  • Use evidence-based curriculums such as Triple P parenting and/or Connect
  • Provide a 10-week educational program to support parents and caregivers of preteens and teens with behavioural and emotional programs
  • Expose the child/youth/family to positive community involvement through youth work, recreational activities, experiential learning activities and build position community connection

Outcomes

The goal of the ReDirect program is to:

  • Increase the awareness surrounding the negative exposure to criminal activity
  • Increase guardians understanding of the vulnerabilities that expose child/youth and that are challenged cognitively
  • To educate about strategies and support to guardians to reduce vulnerabilities, and risk and increase protective factors
  • To increase capacity to utilize community resources
  • To increase positive behavioral changes, resiliency, positive changes
  • To increase involvement in pro social activities
